That's why we among the most hip in the jazz world mostly say
"axe" for any instrument-wind or otherwise. It doesn't often apply

My god, has that term come back?! It was in rampant use almost
exactly 50 years ago, in the USAF Band, if you were hep. (Which
was in the process of replacing "hip," which also seems to have
come back!)
Hmm, I think "hep" is gone for good, along with "rebop" for bebop. I
don't think "hip" ever left, at least not among jazz musicians.
I even called my girlfriend "man", man!
