 Manhasset stands are terrific.

I agree. I have Manhassets in several of my Elementary school band rooms. They require tightening from time to time. This is a small inconvenience, but I have to have my socket wrench handy to fix them right. Sometimes the desks get loose as well, but a screwdriver is all that is needed to remedy the situation. The Manhassets are very rugged and take a beating.

Absolutely! There were a couple of problems with the original models from the 1930s and '40s, which have been corrected over the years. And yes, the bottom nuts and the tension on the music desk hinge sometimes need adjustment, but that's actually an advantage since older stands can be adjusted to optimum.

The one thing that can happen with rough usage over a long time is that the corners of the music desk lip can get bent. I suspect that they can be bent back; I've just never tried it.

Most general musical equipment jobbers carry them, and carry them at discount prices. (So-called "List" prices are usually pure fiction in the music business anyhow, and nobody should ever pay those prices!) I've just checked in the Woodwind and Brasswind printed catalog for School Year 2008-2009 and found quite a variety available, at these prices (rounded off):

Model 48 Stand (the classic standard) $35
Model 48 Six-Pack 30 each
Model 48T extra tall 39
Model 50 w/accessory shelf 40
Model 52 Voyager (folding base) 35
Model 51 w/extra wide desk 40
Model 49 Conductor's w/ score storage 60
Model 54 Conductor's extra wide dual-column 75

And lots of accessories and replacement parts. Comparison shop at Giardinelli and other full-service distributors.

Oops! Just checked the Giardinelli website, and they've been bought out by Woodwind & Brasswind! And some of the online prices are already up from the catalog prices above.
