Hi Chuck,
Rather than make new templates, you should make yourself a brand-new Document
Style. You can then select that style when creating new documents via the Setup
Wizard. Otherwise, you will not get many of the new benefits of the Score
Manager system. Having a bunch of templates for various instrumentations is not
really the best way to go -- the Document Style allows you to use a single
document as the basis for everything you write, regardless of instrumentation.
If there's an ensemble that you use frequently, instead of making a template
for it, you can just save it in the Setup Wizard. Check the documentation on
Document Styles to learn how to do this.
You can (and should) base your new Document Style on a copy of the Finale 2012
default document -- you'll need to make a lot of adjustments, so the best thing
to do is to open Finale 2011 and Finale 2012, and compare each section of the
Document Options for your old template in Finale 2011 side-by-side with the
corresponding section in Finale 2012. Then type in all of the necessary changes
to the Document Settings in your clean Finale 2012 file, which will be the
basis for your Document Style. Of course, as you know you'll also need to
import any custom articulation, expression, and chord libraries (deleting the
existing items first), adjust your Smart Shape placement settings, re-create
any custom Smart Shapes and Staff Styles, set up all your metatools, etc. This
is all very tedious but if you use Document Styles then you only have to do it
once (as opposed to many times for many different templates) -- and it is MUCH
safer and more reliable to start with a clean Finale 2012 file than it is to
import an existing template from an earlier version of Finale.
As for the slash characters, that's actually a two-step process. First, in
Document Options -> Fonts, choose "Alternate Notation" from the "Notation"
pull-down menu, then select "ChordSym" (24 point). Then, in Document Options ->
Alternate Notation -> Music Characters, for each item ("Large Slash," "Small
Slash," etc) click "Select" and choose the appropriate character from the
ChordSym font set.
Cheers,
- DJA
