I don't think it's a matter of assuming computer users are gods of the backup. 
Rather the opposite.

Either you're good at backups or you're not.  If you are, then you'll be 
putting regular copies on an external drive either way.  If you're not, well, 
whose computer is more likely to "disappear" without warning, the offsite 
storage service's, or your own?
