since 2006 (F2007) it has been necessary to live
with **significant** compromise in the SC if you
actually want to use linked parts in a project
(in the way they are meant). i prepare the SC so
that the PTs will look awesome; the conductor (1
person) will inevitably be more flexible with the
compromises than the orchestral musician (82
people on my current project).

i know, total bullshit. and extremely deplorable
that finale has let this go on and seems not to
be taking its userbase seriously for so long.

but hey, maybe we will get a T-shirt -- or better
still, bring back the FinaleĀ® water bottle, yeah!
-- with the next release (if we agree to give
makemusic our money before the product is even
ready for release), then i will *totally* be able
to live with the inadequecies of the
insufficiently implemented features for another
(apparently no longer annual) upgrade cycle.
because banal and trite little "gifts" are the
valium that help me forget all about the
frustrations of working with a product i pay for
that is not fully functional...

as i understand (sibelius users, please confirm),
the smart shapes in sibelius are "attached" to a
rhythmic point but start/endpoints are positioned
at an "absolute" distance, so collisions are
avoided in the PTs when they are set right in the
SC. finale start/endpoints are proportionally
positioned. just stupid. dumb. ok, you made an
error, it happens... but fer fuck sakes, fix
it!!!!

ok rant over (for now). check out the following
document. can you feel the pain?

note the spacing is wide because the
measure/systems are as in the manuscript for
proofing (in the real layout it is tighter). but
here are some of the "tricks" i use:

- excessive space between some dynamics and the hairpins in SC
- dynamics placed outside the hairpins (last page and m840)
- dynamics positioned 30-50 EVPU too far right so
that at least the endpoint of the preceding
hairpin will work in most cases

the last one is maybe the second best trick i
use. the best thing in my workflow to deal with
the endpoints problem is perhaps selective music
spacing while editing. i apply music spacing to
the instrumental sections i am currently working
on only (e.g. only to a single page and only to
the violas while setting the hairpins for the
violas) and adjusting the measure widths so that
the measure widths are minimized close to how
they will be in the individual parts. this way
the hairpins are positioned / adjusted only once
and function in 80% of the cases in the PTs.
