my conclusion to your comments is that one would be "expected to use ß", since the music is almost certainly german or somehow related to the german or austrian contributions to music history pre-1919. or, if swiss, then yeah ss would be the way to go. there is simply no justification to to spell it incorrectly in "universal" contexts. do people call you john outside of german-speaking areas? :-)
