Don, sorry for the long rant previously. There is a "fill in rests" (or some such) feature that you can turn off, but that doesn't account for the inadvertent whole rests. I may be entering them without knowing, in some way. But so far, when I finish a score and want to optimize, I select all, do the "hide empty measures" thing, and then go through the score and manual delete delete whatever is there in the empty measure staves that show up. there are usually only a few, but they do mess up the formatting if I don't fix them.
