jef,

another option you could consider short of upgrading the entire machine is
replacing your system drive (and any other drive) with a solid state drive.
this is probably the single most effective speed upgrade you could make.
you get ones that are plug-compatible with the internal drives of most
machines made in the last 5 years or so.
