Unless I'm missing something, I have never had luck with these. I have tried creating stretchable shapes as well as using standard hairpins and placing the circle. The stretchable ones don't stay attached to the circle. And the standard ones all have to be tweaked in page view in huge magnification -- otherwise they don't end up with the circle in the right place in the final PDFs. Any more automated solution is welcome here, too!
