Well, I finally figured it out. The source tarballs had the
same sizes as you listed, yet the deb file fink built for
xfree86-rootless didn't contain all the XDarwin stuff it was
supposed to, so I figured there had to be an error somewhere
while it was building, so I did a "fink rebuild xfree86-rootless"
yet again, but this time sent the output to a file to look at
afterwards.

And I found the error:
 pbxbuild -target XDarwin -buildstyle Deployment
 dyld: pbxbuild can't open library:
/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/JavaKit.framework/Versions/A/JavaKit (No such file
or directory, errno = 2)
 gnumake[6]: *** [XDarwin] Error 60

That file wasn't there, and JavaKit.framework mostly
contained symlinks to nonexistant files and a file named
version.plist, but no actual JavaKit file.

After talking to people, I figured out that JavaKit is
supposed to come from the developer tools, which I had
already installed. I moved the entire JavaKit.framework
directory out of the way and reinstalled the developer
tools, and that did the trick. The directory was populated
with more files than were there before, and another fink
rebuild built me a working XDarwin. Woohoo. :-)

I still have no idea why my original installation of the
developer tools didn't install all the JavaKit stuff that it
was supposed to, or why my attempts to reinstall it without
moving the directory out of the way didn't add the missing
files (I suppose the installer just wasn't checking things
carefully enough), or why the pbxbuild failure wasn't a
fatal error.

I'll probably write to the maintainer of xfree86-rootless
and ask if they can fix the fact that the pbxbuild failure
wasn't fatal, since if XDarwin can't be built that seems
like something that should be an error not a warning ;-P but
I want to look at things a little first to see if I can tell
what actually has to be changed to make the fix.

Thanks to everyone who helped. startx works, now on to fun
with windowmanagers and things. :-)

Sara
(who at this point has fink selfupdate'd about 5 times,
rebuilt xfree86-base and xfree86-rootless 4 times each,
downloaded the developers tools cd image twice, and reran
the developer tools installer 5 times or so. Sigh. But
things finally work.)
