For OroborOSX specifically, there is no problem (I use it).

In general, if you are building other applications from source, you need
to ensure that the locations any required libraries and executables get
put in the makefile--usually there's a 'configure' script to do this.

Unfortunately, if you want to use packages that are distributed in
precompiled form, you may have to go to more trouble, like putting
symbolic links to fink-installed libraries and executables, or even
installing duplicates in more 'standard' locations.
