Maybe Chris should have elaborated a bit:

In X11, there are two cut buffers. Only one of them works with cutting
and pasting from and to Aqua. Some applications, like xterm, use this
one, some, like AbiWord, the other one. The autocutsel utility unifies
the two cut buffers.

You can see such a behavior sometimes even inside X11, for example on
Solaris where you cannot cut&paste between xterm and mailtool (an
openwindows application). I've hated this for years.

So: Without autocutsel, cut&paste between Aqua and X11 works for some
X11 clients, not for others. With autocutsel, it always works (famous
last words :-)).
