If you just want to test it, just open an xterm and do 'autocutsel &', that
should start it for the current X session. Adding it to .xinitrc just makes
it start automatically, kind of like a login item in OSX.

The fact that you don't have an .xinitrc puzzles me though -- what does your
setup look like? What windowmanager do you use? (Normally, without an
.xinitrc, X will have trouble starting, especially since the windowmanager
normally is started as the last thing in the rcfile.)
