So here is my plea, will one of you seasoned Unix gods PLEASE put up a post on EXACTY what to do with the .xinitrc file. Please make this step-by-step as if you are addressing a complete unix moron (which you are in my case).
My gratitude shall be eternal.

Here's a related question:
Does anyone know how to configure Gnome to do one of the following with
its menu bar:
a) offset the Gnome menu bar (so it would be below the Apple menu bar)
When I used Fink's XFree86, the Gnome menu bar appeared immediately
below the Apple menu bar. Now that I use X11, it appears behind the Apple
menu bar, such that I can't see it.
b) tell the Gnome menu bar not to show up at all (probably not possible)
c) tell hte Gnome menu bar to appear on a different side of the screen.
I've looked through the settings & help, and haven't spotted anything. But
perhaps I'm missing an opening.
Thanks!

I don't know of a way to hide the MacOS menubar.
To get XDarwin back, follow the instructions in
http://fink.sourceforge.net/faq/comp-packages.php#cant-install-xfree
When you have XDarwin back, then you can indeed login as >console, with
no password, to be able to launch X from the console.

I have noticed an interesting thing about Apple's X11. I have Gnome
installed. (Thanks for the help getting installed.) When I am running
in Gnome the Mac menu bar doesn't hide and it covers the Gnome menu
bar. From looking around I see I can't hide the Gnome menu bar. Also
any window I have open in Gnome is always put to the back under Mac OS
windows. Even when X11 is the active app all it's window still are sent
to the back.
Is there a know way to hide the Mac OS menu bar? If not how can I get
XDarwin back so I can do full screen mode?
Note: I had XDarwin loaded, then had to wipe my drive clean. Since then
I installed Apple's X11 first, so it the only X11 setup on my system
currently.
Just by chance does anyone know how to login to X11 the login pane
(>console)?
