Actually, for GNOME, you can have

gnome-session

as the last line of xinitrc (no &), and don't call another window manager
above it, because gnome-session calls sawfish by default.  However, if
you'd rather have another wm, then you can call it, e.g.:

fvwm2 &
gnome-session

Apple X11 should read your .xinitrc
