Thanks 4 the help. I edited my xinitrc file as follows:

if [ -f $userresources ]; then
    xrdb -merge $userresources
fi

if [ -f $usermodmap ]; then
    xmodmap $usermodmap
fi

# start some nice programs

gnome-session
Gnome runs very well now either by 'startx' in terminal.app or starting XDarwin in full screen. X11(apple) stuffs up though. And I also get the gnome menu under the OSX menu. Why no X11 apple.

This is the same message I got when I was using one window manager

Presuming that you are doing the same thing, I suggest doing the
following:

Duplicate the file etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc so you have a backup.
Edit that file (sudo pico etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc).
Down near the bottom, it'll say:
	twm &
	xclock -geometry 50x50-1+1 &
Change twm to sawfish or whatever other window manager you wanna use.
Actually, for GNOME, you can have

gnome-session

as the last line of xinitrc (no &), and don't call another window manager
above it, because gnome-session calls sawfish by default. However, if
you'd rather have another wm, then you can call it, e.g.:

fvwm2 &
gnome-session

Currently, I use Apple's X11 and I believe it ignores this file, as it
always uses its own window manager (which I think is "quartz-wm").
Apple X11 should read your .xinitrc

And then, to directly answer your question, I start Gnome with
gnome-session
but that's probably not the only way.

how do you start gnome? I installed 'DevTools Dec2002', then 'fink

All A ok. But if I launch XDarwin and type 'gnome-session' or
'gnome-wm' in xterm it says:

[nilsmac:~] nilscrompton% gnome-wm
You may only run one window manager
[nilsmac:~] nilscrompton%

or..

[nilsmac:~] nilscrompton% gnome-session
_IceTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.ICE-unix should be set to root
SESSION_MANAGER=local/nilsmac.local.:/tmp/.ICE-unix/10848
You may only run one window manager

I assume I am a total loon.
