You shouldn't need to recompile kde just to get applesystemfonts fonts. If you've updated your X you may need to reinstall applesystemfonts to get it to readd itself to your X configuration.


OR, you may need to go into the KDE control center and enable font smoothing (Xft), in which case you will get access to the Apple fonts again.

Also related to that. If my way of thinking is true, does it mean that an apt-get installed package will never see the OS X fonts, unless its binary has been compiled against applesystemfonts?

No, there's nothint to "compile against" for applesystemfonts. Where did you get this information?
