You shouldn't need to recompile kde just to get applesystemfonts fonts. If you've updated your X you may need to reinstall applesystemfonts to get it to readd itself to your X configuration.

OR, you may need to go into the KDE control center and enable font smoothing (Xft), in which case you will get access to the Apple fonts again.

Maybe I didn't explain it very well. I changed nothing at all, but upgrading applesystemfonts from 1.0.1 to 1.0.2. Let me summarize what I did:
1) The computer had no KDE at all, but it had applesystemfonts 1.0.1 already installed.
2) I compiled KDE 3.1.
3) I started up Apple's X11, and the KDE through "startkde &"
4) I checked the compilation and everything worked as expected, including the presence of OS X fonts in KDE applications.
5) I logged out from KDE, and quitted X11.
6) I put a copy of applesystemfonts-1.0-2.info in "/sw/fink/10.2/local/main/finkinfo/applesystemfonts-1.0-2.info", updated fink through cvs (rather than a simple "fink index"), and a "fink update-all" saw my new version for applesystemfonts and updated it.
7) I then repeated steps 3) and 4), but now KDE applications can't see my OS X fonts.

So, I changed nothing inside KDE from one session to another, but the version on applesystemfonts in the way I've explained.
Of course, I've checked out your suggestion of activating anti-aliased fonts, but I couldn't recover the OS X fonts inside KDE.

Also related to that. If my way of thinking is true, does it mean that an apt-get installed package will never see the OS X fonts, unless its binary has been compiled against applesystemfonts?

No, there's nothint to "compile against" for applesystemfonts. Where did you get this information?

As we say in spanish, "it's from my own harvest" ;-)
It's based on the fact that a compilation of KDE with an installed version of applesystemfonts was able to detect OS X fonts inside KDE, but an updating of applesystemfonts once KDE is installed breaks this detection.

So, I ask again: which of the KDE packages controls the fonts? If I'm right, a rebuild of the package may bring back the missing OS X fonts.

Thanks for your help,
