This is slightly exaggerated. While system-xfree86 may not care, there are some incompatibilities between any two different versions of xfree86. Sometimes they are not serious, but sometimes they may require recompilation of some libraries. In particular, whatever you compile while xfree-4.3 is installed has good chances of not running with Apple's X11. Also xaw3d is known for needing recompilation whenever you switch x11 versions.
