It doesn't matter whether automake or automake1.6 is installed. Trying to install the other generates the same error message regarding "trying to overwrite 's/sw/bin/aclocal'.." message. I tried various versions of leaving automake, or automake1.6, installed, or both uninstalled, before doing the aforementioned fink installs, but they call out whichever one isn't installed. Is there a special trick to installing both?
Make sure that you have version 1.6.3-3 of the automake package descriptions. This version does not install any files, so the conflict you mention cannot happen. Remove any earlier version of automake. Then installing either automake1.6-1.6.3-1 or just automake (which depends on the other one) will succeed.
