If you only want to install the unstable version of abiword, you can try this (WARNING: i have not tried this!)

apt-get install abiword/unstable

This won't work. Instead take a look in the faq or type "fink
install abiword" and follow the instructions given to you on the screen.

sorry guys! I'll try to be more careful about answering emails at 3AM. :)

If the method you used under Linux was to edit the password file, and you want to duplicate that, you want to look in NetInfo Manager. It apparently replaces several config files, but I haven't looked into it all that deeply yet.

But the passwd file is there. It lays in /etc/passwd and you can edit it with every editor you like, you only need root privileges to do > so.

It does exist, but I have been lead to believe that the files /etc/passwd and /etc/groups are only used in single-user mode. I'm not really sure how to test that safely though. :) But I do know that editing the login shell via NetInfo Manager works. Even if NetInfo Manager is a bit scarier looking than a few config files. :)
