It's probably going to do more harm than good for me to include my guesses
as to what is wrong here, so I will try to keep it to a minimum. But I
should say that someone suggested that problems were due to ncurses, so I
have rebuilt and reinstalled the following files, but it didn't seem to
help.

[peanut:~] jeffreyc% fink list -i | grep ncurses

 i ncurses 5.3-20031018-2 Full-screen ascii drawing library
 i ncurses-dev 5.3-20031018-2 Development files for ncurses...
i ncurses-shlibs 5.3-20031018-2 Shared libraries for ncurses package

So here's the problem.

[peanut:/sw/bin] jeffreyc# fink selfupdate

...

can't find curses file
make[2]: *** [curkeys.h] Error 1
make[1]: *** [all-dselect] Error 2
make: *** [all-recursive] Error 2
### execution of failed, exit code 2
Failed: compiling dpkg-1.10.9-200 failed

I can run dselect just fine, which makes me thing that dpkg is working. So
why would it say that it failed trying to compile dpkg? I get the same
errors when trying to install other packages.

Any help would be appreciated.
-Jeff

PS: I also can't install emacs with X11 support because I used the X11
installer from Apple and fink is telling me that I need to delete it first.
Is there any way around this?
