I did a more thorough search and found more than one extraneous copy of HEAD
floating around on my system.  I removed them and it worked like a charm.
Thanks for the tip.  Sorry to waste your time with something that was in the
FAQ - for some reason I was so focused on the ncurses thing that I didn't
realize the head usage message above it.

I do think it was a perl module that put it there, so I will keep an eye on
this in the future.
