I did this as well, and I now have a functioning xmms 1.2.8
installation from the unstable tree. I've also installed xmms-shn
so I can use xmms to play .shn files.

There is a little bit of weirdness, though: xmms will launch and
run fine if I launch it from the command line in an xterm, but if
I launch it from the Apple X11's Applications menu, it will
launch OK, but when I try to play a file or stream, it puts up
the "Couldn't open audio" error dialog that it puts up when the
wrong output plugin is selected.

Except it's not. The esound plugin is selected.

Weird.
