Bingo! That did it.

I wish I knew why it's necessary to do this, though. My .xinitrc
file contains (only)

        source /sw/bin/init.sh
        xterm -ls -sb -sl 2000 -rightbar -fn 6x13 &
        exec quartz-wm

and the other items in the Apple X11's Applications menu work
fine without prepending ". /sw/bin/init.sh ;" to the command to
launch the application.

Ah well, anyway, it works fine now.
