It's probably not a good idea to manually put stuff in /sw. Fink
doesn't know to check for changes you manually make there, and so may
over-write your files with its own or get confused by the presence or
version-difference of something it doesn't expect.

You're much safer putting your own stuff in /usr/local or somesuch, or
else modifying a copy of the fink package to suite your needs. As a
bonus (as was already mentioned) you can see what other configure
flags and other non-obvious steps are needed to compile the thing.
