Attempted your suggestion; results as follows;
MARKLAPTOP:~ markz$ dpkg -i xfree86-shlibs

MARKLAPTOP:~ markz$ sudo dpkg -i xfree86-shlibs

dpkg: error processing xfree86-shlibs (--install):
cannot access archive: No such file or directory
Errors were encountered while processing:
xfree86-shlibs
MARKLAPTOP:~ markz$ sudo dpkg -r --force-all xfree86-shlibs
dpkg - warning: ignoring request to remove xfree86-shlibs which isn't installed.
Appears that I don't have xfree86-shlibs installed...

AAAGH--a typo. That should be "xfree86-shlibs", rather than "xfree86-shilbs", which unfortunately is the package that frequently has caused trouble. Try running "dpkg -l xfree86-shlibs" and see if you get anything back. If you do then you need to run
sudo dpkg -r --force-all xfree86-shlibs
Then reinstall Apple's X11.
