This seems to (my very uneducated eye) to indicate that DPKG things that xfree86 and xfree86-shlibs are in(stalled)? However I reran Alex's suggested command to uninstall these with the results below:

MARKLAPTOP:/Users/markz root# dpkg -r --force-all xfree86
dpkg - warning: ignoring request to remove xfree86 which isn't installed.
MARKLAPTOP:/Users/markz root# dpkg -r --force-all xfree86-shlibs
dpkg - warning: ignoring request to remove xfree86-shlibs which isn't installed.

Confused (but optimistic),

Mark

Alex,
Attempted your suggestion; results as follows;
MARKLAPTOP:~ markz$ dpkg -i xfree86-shlibs

I think Alex meant "-l", not "-i". Anyway, for hard to diagnose cases, there is my fink-x11-debug script. Could you run it with the following command line:

curl -f -L http://perso.wanadoo.fr/costabel/fink-x11-debug | perl

and send me the output?
