I've done it and works great. Need to install the OS X developer tools and then choose the gui bundle you want to run.

Hello,

I would like some exposure to a Linux desktop so I was thinking of installing the stuff I need to run gnome/kde in a window/full screen on my G4 tower. Is that doable? Is it realistic? If so how do I get a complete set of packages so that I have a working Linux desktop under OSX?

You certainly can do such a thing via Fink: installing the 'bundle-gnome' and 'bundle-kde' or 'bundle-kde-ssl' packages will install everything you need to run GNOME or KDE, respectively.
