thanks Alexander,

I guess I had a hard time keeping everything straight. In any case, I installed the packages above and then removed the wrong ones:

sudo apt-get install --reinstall gnome-libs -dev gnome-print-dev

You removed libgnomeprintui2 (and splitoffs), and still have libgnomeprintui2.2 (and its splitoffs)--that's fine, since these are eparate packages).

Also, libgnomeprint2 was removed, but not its splitoffs--not surprising. You can remove them separately.

And trying to rebuild evolution:

Removing build lock...

dpkg -r fink-buildlock-evolution-1.4.6-10

(Reading database ... 153222 files and directories currently installed.)

Removing fink-buildlock-evolution-1.4.6-10 ...

Failed: phase compiling: evolution-1.4.6-10 failed

hmm...maybe this is one of those misleading errors. If you run

dpkg -S /sw /include/gtkhtml/gtkhtml.h

what package does it show as providing gtkhtml.h?
