What are the results of the commands "ls -ld /" and "id" (type them
each, without quotes, in a Terminal or xterm window).

Have you ever deleted anything from your /Library/Receipts folder?

First, I confirm I have run Repair Disk Permissions, to no avail.
As for the outpiut of the above commands,
see below. Note that I have created a non-privileged user,
"marciano", who cannot "sudo", and a user with
administrator rights, "theboss", who can.

Welcome to Darwin!
MargiePB:~ marciano$ ls -ld /
drwxrwxr-t   30 root  admin  1122 Jun 17 16:22 /
MargiePB:~ marciano$ su theboss
Password:
MargiePB:/Users/marciano theboss$ ls -ld /
drwxrwxr-t   30 root  admin  1122 Jun 17 16:22 /
MargiePB:/Users/marciano theboss$ id
uid=502(theboss) gid=502(theboss) groups=502(theboss),
81(appserveradm), 79(appserverusr), 80
(admin)
MargiePB:/Users/marciano theboss$ exit
exit
MargiePB:~ marciano$ id
uid=501(marciano) gid=501(marciano) groups=501(marciano)
MargiePB:~ marciano$
What happens if you try to sudo (note not su) theboss, then install. Or even better reboot, login as theboss, then install.

Cheers,
Michèle
