But fink-0.28.5 *is* in stable. The as yet unexplained episode is that 
for some people, the fink-0.28.5 package description, although it is 
available on their machine, is not seen by fink-0.27.16, until "fink 
index -f" is run.

I don't know if this was your case, too, but it seems that the index 
database can get into an obstinate state where a simple "index" does not 
suffice to wake it up to the existence of new package descriptions.
