Thanks Martin, that helps clear things up a little and it explains the
comment that I saw on one of the lists about index -f as I was going
catching up on my reading last night. This was immediately after a
(successful) fink self-update:
i fink 0.27.16-41

So clearly I was experiencing the problem. Oddly, the same self-update
brought me this:
(i) readline-shlibs 4.3-1029

So I guess it is just the fink package whose .info wasn't happily
indexed. I guess it also seems odd to me that 0.27.16-41 isn't the one
that came in the binary distribution; I mean it must have already been
updated from 0.27.13-41.

I can check the lists to see which version others were stuck on if you
think that would be useful. Also, I still have me output if that helps,
but I don't see anything useful in it.
