They'll learn soon enough that you can't do certain things. OSX is not
OS9. Just because you (the generic you) want to do it doesn't mean it
isn't a bad idea.
No offense intended, but you seem to be misunderstanding most newbie's expectation on Fink, their attitude towards it, on the one hand, and overestimating the analytic power of normal Mac users, on the other. ;-)

As far as I can see, the reason that more and more people are attracted to Fink is *not* because it provides a purer Unix environment, but because it provides cool stuff like GIMP, well known as the Photoshop Killer for free. This is my personal observation, and is subject to a misconception.

Assuming I'm not wildly wrong here, I don't think, from a kind of customer support perspective, it is a realistic assumption to expect Mac users to "learn" eventually that they can't move Unix-y stuff. Most of them won't realize what's wrong, really. ;-)

I'm not sure about this, but what is the Fink team's concensus regarding the *proper target* of its development? (Can I look for this in the list archives?) Is it those who want OS X to be more Unix-y, hoping that normal Mac users are eventually staying away from Fink? Or is it, alternatively, those who want Unix-y stuff to be more Mac-y?

There is unix under OSX and by convention, certain things are in certain
places. If you're so contrary (the generic you again) and have so much
spare time that you HAVE to rename things, you should have to expect that
you'll have to fix a lot of things by hand.
I'm very uncertain how much OS X is Unix now, and it will be. Yes, it is UNIX-compatible, but I think it's very unlikely that Apple will try to make it closer to traditional Unix environment. The trend is on its opposite.

So, how does Fink project react to this? for or against?

Kow
