Well, you were right up to a point. The 3.0.2 KDE binaries ran fine on first boot, but afterwards stopped being able to switch themes or use IceWM but was still able to run GIMP and KOffice (the only two progs I really want anyway), so the binary 3.0.2 works for those who don't need it to look pretty.
