Hello all, First off, I would like to say that I *don't* think the following was your guy's fault, but my father insisted that I write this (as he *does* think it is).
After the earlier errors with ncurses and dpkg, we decided that we should try to fix the fink installation. Without deleting any older packages, we ran the 0.4.1 binary installer. After seeing that fink didn't think any packages were installed, we decided to start completely over. To delete fink, the directories /sw, /usr/X11R6, /etc/X11, and /Applications/XDarwin.app were removed. The binary installer was run once again. The moment that the install finished, all the icons disappeared off of my dad's desktop. He tried to reboot from the Apple menu, but the system just went down to a blue screen. When nothing else happened, a command-control-power key (on his PowerBook) was used to reboot. I held down command-v to boot in verbose mode, and fsck was automatically run and the system was (apparently) repaired. The boot seemed to progress normally from there, until the login window tried to come up. Instead of the normal login window, all we got was a blue screen. Since we were in verbose mode, we saw the window manager flicker off then back on. Something was written to the console, but we couldn't tell what it was. Rebooting into single-user mode showed that the user 'nwatzman' had been replaced with the number '502' (I think). Since I thought that the netinfo database was probably corrupt, I replaced it with the backup, but got the same problem as before. What we ended up doing was using the OS 9 install disk to set the startup disk to the OS 9 system folder, which was (thankfully!) still intact and bootable. We are going to reinstall OS X later this week. I do *not* think that fink was at fault here (how could it be?). Do you know what may have caused this, or is it a generic hard drive error? Besides running TechTool and reinstalling OS X, is there anything else we should do? Thanks, just wanted to let you know what happened, since fink was being installed at the same time that this occurred. Sorry it was so long-winded. -- -- sinclair44 Optimism: "If you see a light at the end of the wormhole, it's probably an explosion from the death of another borg cube."
