Instead of the normal login window, all we got was a blue screen. Since we
were in verbose mode, we saw the window manager flicker off then back on.
Something was written to the console, but we couldn't tell what it was.

Rebooting into single-user mode showed that the user 'nwatzman' had been
replaced with the number '502' (I think). Since I thought that the netinfo
database was probably corrupt, I replaced it with the backup, but got the
same problem as before.
I have seen such behavior in two situations:

Once when I accidentally removed the x permission for 'others' on the "/" directory,

and once when the symlink /var->/private/var was removed by some evil fink package.

Or maybe when removing /etc/X11, you removed the symlink /etc->/private/etc ?

When you were in single user mode, did you look at the root directory to see whether it appeared OK, that is in particular the following (extract from "ls -la /"):

drwxrwxr-t 44 root admin 1496 Oct 29 22:15 .
drwxrwxr-x 33 root admin 1122 Oct 18 19:37 Library
drwxr-xr-x 5 root wheel 170 Oct 18 19:37 System
lrwxrwxr-t 1 root admin 11 Oct 29 22:15 etc -> private/etc
lrwxrwxr-t 1 root admin 11 Oct 29 22:15 tmp -> private/tmp
drwxr-xr-x 13 root wheel 442 Jul 14 08:21 usr
lrwxrwxr-t 1 root admin 11 Oct 29 22:15 var -> private/var
