Kind of OT, but there's a bug in the OSX install CD that bit me a while
ago, looks like it got you too. It's got *nothing* to do with fink
messing up your install.
In my case, I did a full OSX install from the CD and during the install
set my localization to English only, de-selecting the other languages.
Fine, no problem... I needed the disc space. While tweaking my machine
later on, I deleted a kernel extension that was critical to startup,
leaving me with a braindead OS on the next reboot. Doh.
I popped in the OSX install CD, and it basically told me to get stuffed.
Can't remember the exact error but it was to the effect that the CD I
had could not be used to upgrade/fix my install because of my
localization. (Even though it was the same CD I used to *install* the OS
in the first place!)
This was in 10.1, I don't know if Jaguar exhibits this kind of behavior
too. I had to reformat and reinstall from scratch.
Hindsight's 20/20 ;) Oh well...
HTH,
D.

We've already deleted OS X, although against my will, so we can't try
that. More than the permissions for / were just screwed up, though. The
OS X install disk, which we used to originally install OS X, said
something about different languages and wouldn't go past the
disk-selection step; that's why we deleted it. We'll try the install
again later.
To help you diagnose the problem with changing permissions, I'll point
out that we ran the 0.4.0 installer twice (with two months in-between)
with no problems. However, the receipt may have been deleted in-between
those installations. We also ran the 0.4.1 installer on top of an
existing installation, with no problems. We then (immediately) ran it
again *after* deleting the fink installation, but *without* deleting the
receipt that the .pkg left. This seems to also have been Andy
Cunningham's problem.
In the little I know about .pkg programming, this doesn't seem fixable.
It seems that, especially with all of the other .pkg problems, it would
be easier to create/license a .app installer.
