Gimp and no more images in help I must respectfully disagree with your rather flippant statement that "the problem will just go away"..
Believe me, I know you are occupied with other problems, but if you do not fix this one, Fink will become unuseable. I can see it comming. This is a recurring problem, and not at all "normal" as you stated. I am working on this right now and will post a (hopefully) solution soon. Don't just ignore it. Work on it.
