As some of you know, the LyX Meta key does not appear to work properly on MacOS X. I have some more specific information on this. After an e-mail exchange with Jeffrey Whittaker, the maintainer of both the xforms and LyX ports for fink, I/we have determined that the Meta key *does* work when you have the proper xmodmap settings, but *only* for LyX key bindings. The Meta key does *not* work for accessing the xforms-based UI elements. (Thank you, Jeff; you were very kind to help me figure this out.)
Normally, a labeled xforms UI element will have one of the letters in its label underlined, typically the first letter. You can access the UI element using the keyboard by typing Meta and then the letter: this will make it as though you clicked on the element with your mouse. For example, to cause the File menu to pop up, I can normally type Meta-F on my Linux box at school. On MacOS X, such keyboard shortcuts have never worked, with any combination of XFree86 or window manager. The problem is not a bug in the port of xforms (or LyX) per se, because even when LyX is run remotely on, say, a Linux or Solaris box, and is displayed on a MacOS X host running either XDarwin or Apple's X11, the problem persists: one cannot access the UI elements using the Meta-key shortcuts. So, here's my question: can anyone think of a way I can debug this problem? If not, whom should I contact to fix this bug? The xforms team? The XonX project? The XFree86 project?
