just wanted to report that I finally tried the installation instructions for
lyx-1.3.2 for X11 and QT2 at http://www.18james.com, and the
menu shortcuts all seem to work fine. I meanwhile did this installation
on 3 different Macs. The "good" thing for this lyx installation is that
fink's qt2 package when compiled with g++2 actually seems to survive
a "fink update-all" (I just tried this) - so it doesn't get rebuilt with g++3.
This could also be bad if some additional package is subsequently installed
that needs qt2 with g++3 compilation... but of course I like it the way it is.
Anyway, lyx/X11 with QT2 is now my favorite version (I also tried the Aqua version, but its nice antialised appearance doesn't make up for the unsatisfactory meta- and control key usage).

I chatted via e-mail with Ronald Florence about this: it turns out that Qt
for Aqua does not use Meta-key shortcuts for things like menus and buttons,
whereas the X11 version of Qt *does*. Just today, in fact, I compiled LyX
for Qt/X11 on my TiBook and I can *finally* access everything using the
keyboard, including menus and dialog box buttons. Thanks for Ronald for
his excellent instructions on how to compile LyX/Qt/X11 for MacOS X.

Daniel: But I don't think the Qt version of lyx would have the kind of
keyboard navigation of menus that you are looking for - that's a feature
specific to xforms isn't it? I've got the aqua version of qt lyx
installed (from http://www.18james.com/lyx_on_aqua.html), and I can't
navigate menus with the keyboard.

It's not that hard compiling qt2 with g++2, using Ronald James' excellent
instructions. So, one way to make a lyx-qt package feasible without
disturbing anyone's existing installation is to *add* a pair of packages
called something like qt2-g++2 and qt2-shlibs-g++2, and then have the
lyx-qt package depend on *those* instead of the regular qt2 packages. Of
course, I'm not on the fink team and don't know how to make fink packages,
so someone else would have to do this, but I don't think it would be that
hard.

Jens: A lyx-qt package is not feasible right now. Since lyx 1.3 won't
compile with apple's gcc 3.1, we currently use g++2 (gcc 2.95) to compile
it. Due to incompatibilities in the c++ ABI between g++2 and g++3, this
requires all c++ libs that lyx links to be compiled with g++2. So, in
order to get lyx-qt to work, qt would have to be compiled with g++2 (this
is in the http://www.18james.com/lyx_on_osx.html instructions). I don't
think we want to mess with the qt package just to get lyx-qt to work -
it's probably better to wait for gcc 3.3 (which hopefully fixes the bug
that prevents lyx from compiling).
