Oops. <sheepish grin> After much head scratching, it turns out that the right parameter is "--ansi" and *not* "-s." I have absolutely no idea know where that "-s" came from. For future reference, I also had to re-run "daemonic enable mysql" (and reboot, of course) for the change to take place.
