I guess it's not too surprising that you had to rerun "daemonic enable mysql". I'd guess daemonic had to rewrite the actual startup script that lives under /System/Library/StartupItems . You may have been able with not rebooting by killing the process and running it manually, but the reboot is safer.

After much head scratching, it turns out that the right parameter
is "--ansi" and *not* "-s."  I have absolutely no idea know where
that "-s" came from.

For future reference, I also had to re-run "daemonic enable mysql"
(and reboot, of course) for the change to take place.
