Subject: [Fink-users] mixing apt-get with fink

merry christmas,

i've installed the program "lilypond" (unstable) with fink. now i want
to install somethin with apt, but i recieve the folowing error message:

sudo apt-get install denemo
Reading Package Lists... Done

You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies:
denemo: Depends: gtk+-shlibs but it is not going to be installed
Depends: libgnugetopt-shlibs but it is not going to be
installed

   tetex-base: Depends: tetex-shlibs (= 2.0.2-12) but 2.0.2-34 is to be
installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or
specify a solution).

when running apt-get -f install it wants to remove lilypopond. what can
i do to keep my version of lilypond and to install new packages?

thanx alot in advance

So how does one update fink now? I get:
jslater% fink install fink
/usr/bin/sudo /sw/bin/fink install fink
Information about 2204 packages read in 3 seconds.
The following package will be installed or updated:
  fink
Failed: No mirror site list file found for mirror 'master'.

I get the same results with update.

Subject: [Fink-users] Jabber install questions?

Hello,

Fist off, Merry Christmas to those of you who celebrate it.

I would like to try the jabber server, so I did the following:

1) fresh install of Panther.
2) fresh install fo fink and fink commander
3) ran selfupdate-cvs from fink commander
4) told fink commander to show unstable releases
5) installed the jabber webmin module and the jabber server
6) after install, opened webmin in Safari and went to the jabber icon
under servers. I get a message that

"The jabber server program /sw/lib/bin/jabberd was not found on your
system. Either jabber is not installed (it is) or your module
configuration is incorrect."

Now I'm kind f a newbie to unix, so I'm not sure how I'm supposed to
configure the module. It looks to me that the module expect jabberd to
be started already, and gives the startup command as:

/Library/StartupItems/deaemonic-jabber start

but when I look in the /Library/StartupItems folder, well, there is no
/Library/StartupItems folder!

Does anyone have the fink installed jabber server running and if you
do, could you please send me the post install tasks? Also, does anyone
have the jabber webmin module running and if you do, could you please
tell me what you did to get it running?

Thank You,

Allan Marcus

The "fix recipe" below does not work for me either. Somebody wrote to
the developer list and said something about using "./inject.pl" to make
it work; can somebody explain what he was talking about?

For me, the first step of the recipe itself fails for the same reason
that fink is failing in the first place:

Spinnaker% sudo fink install fink-0.17.1-1

Here are detailed instructions for recovering from the selfupdate problem.

Go to

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=17203&package_id=69685&release_id=205833

and download the file "fink-mirrors-0.0.2.tar.gz". Unpack it with the
command "tar xfz fink-mirrors-0.0.2.tar.gz", then cd into the fink-mirrors
directory and run the command "./inject.pl".

This assumes that you have successfully installed fink-0.17.2-1, but if
you hadn't installed that, you wouldn't be having this problem!

  -- Dave

P.S. People who upgrade now should go directly to fink-0.17.3-1 which avoids
this problem.

Try installing it with dpkg.

sudo dpkg -i /sw/fink/debs/fink_0.17.1-1_darwin-powerpc.deb

I must say i wish someone would have tested updating before making such
a basic change to fink.

Maybe he was updating from an earlier version of fink. If he had the deb
file, "fink install" should have worked.

More generally, there should be a big warning sign on the packagers
manual page:

If you split a package in two, make sure to propose an update
strategy, because automatic updating will probably fail.

I don't have this .deb.

I went to the mirror & donwloaded fink-0.17.1.tar.gz, but I don't know
how to make a .deb out of it. It looks like it's meant to install fink
from scratch. I tried running it's "inject.pl" and it claimed it had
"updated" me to fink-0.17.1, but then fink selfupdate failed the same
way it has been.

If you put fink-mirrors-0.0.2.tar.gz into /sw/src/, then fink will find
it without looking for a mirror. In this case, "fink install
fink-mirrors" should work.

You need to do a selfupdate that gets you a package description for
fink-mirrors. I don't know how you were able to get fink version
0.17.3.1 without at the same time obtaining a package description for
fink-mirrors. Usually if you do a selfupdate, you first get all the
package descriptions, and only then fink and friends are updated. Did
you do "fink update fink", perhaps?

It thinks that fink-mirrors is a kind of weird version of fink, because
it doesn't know that there is a package named fink-mirrors.

Of course, if you have fink-0.17.3.1 installed without fink-mirrors, you
are in a bad shape, because all the mirror lists are missing. I don't
know what advice to give you to get out of this situation, because I
don't understand how you got into it in the first place.

Subject: [Fink-users] fink alternate location, but apt-get (binary) installing to /sw

Hello,

I installed Fink from source to /fink , and then installed apt. Apt is
installing to /sw . Where is this configured? In my searching I have
not been able to find what I imagine has been answered numerous times.

Thank you,
Lloyd
