Martin,
   As you may have read in my most recent post, I did fix the problem without having to
reinstall X11-beta3.  I will keep xfree86-4.4.0 in mind in case my X11 does get 
corrupted
before I get around to getting Panther.  

  You hint that Fink now detects x11 automatically.  Is this why system-xfree86 no 
longer
needs to be explicitly installed?  What other place-holder packages like system-xfree86
are no longer necessary?
