Thank you Alexander for the suggestion. I did just try that method and the result is shown below. Suspecting the line indicating that 1 package would be removed, with a savings of 4KB, I did a "fink list -i gnome" that showed about 50 packages remaining with bundle-gnome nowhere to be found. So I did successfully remove bundle-gnome, but gnome remains.
I would think that given what appears to be a large push to bring gnome to OS X and fink, some of the developers/porters would have addressed this! Any other suggestions?
You could install the debfoster package from fink and then run 'sudo debfoster'. It will ask you for all packages which are not needed for a dependency if you want to keep them. Otherwise they will be removed.
