Art,
Though I agree with you, I don't think your tone is justified.
Alas, the problem is not unique to gimp ported through fink. Gimp.app also crashes, as does gimpshop. (In fact, I can't even get gimpshop to launch.) In both cases, the crash happens when I try to make a logo with script-fu. I have a feeling that the problems lies with freetype219. The problems seemed to have appeared when this dependency showed up.
I have managed to avoid rolling back by using other apps to satisfy my rather trivial needs, but if it is imperative that you use gimp, taking these issues up with the maintainer would certainly resolve things much more quickly. I have emailed Alex a few times, and he is quite willing to help.
Cheers, P
PS 2.06 is NOT the stone ages. It's still a highly functional version, don't you think?

This indicates another point:
Fink is at the mercy of whatever the upstream developers decide to do. Sometimes they put in full OS X support, which is great for us, but not infrequently they also do things that cause massive breakage. Freetype is notorious in the latter category. Every X11 flavor that Fink supports has a different built-in freetype and things have now diverged sufficiently that we're going back to have packages depend on freetype219 as a common standard.
The freetype219 dependence was added, If I recall correctly, because gimp2 didn't build (or possibly it built but didn't run) vs. Apple's X11.
(I'm the "other" Alexander, by the way, so don't post to me about gimp2. I maintain one of the "fully OS X aware" packages!)
