That short-circuits some stuff (xfontpath, for example), but I also ran
tests running gnome-session from .xinitrc rather than .xinitrc.d/
scripts, with no change in the results.

My tests were on 10.5.8 and 10.6.8, both freshly installed (OS and Fink)
in January of this year, and Richard's machine runs 10.6.

What happens on 10.8.2 isn't necessarily relevant here.
