OK, after some testing I found that gnome-session works OK on 10.8.2 for
me as well.

So I'll revise my statement:  what appears to be broken is the
combination of gnome-session and the old X11s on 10.5 and 10.6.  On 10.5
I got the same results with either the stock Apple X11 and the latest
Xquartz which was available for that (2.6.3).  On 10.6, I only used the
stock X11 since that's what we support.
