I do not have anything special.  It looks like this:

    source ~/.profile
    e16 &
    exec gnome-session

I had some other workarounds in there earlier but they got
progressively unnecessary and the above is all that is needed on my
system right now.  The call to e16 is obviously replaceable with one's
favourite window manager...
